Valley Stream Union Free School District Thirteen’s James A. Dever Elementary School fifth grade students recently visited the Commerce Plaza—a local children’s business center aimed at providing young students with an array of activity-based business experiences. During their visit the students simulated a business community and fulfilled specific roles to contribute to the needs of the entire community.
Students were provided with individualized folders describing their specific jobs, then performed the tasks they were assigned and deposited their “paychecks” into the Plaza’s mock Capital One Bank. During assigned break times, students were able to walk around the business community and decide where to spend their money.
The District constantly seeks new opportunities for students to gain real life experiences outside of the classroom to best prepare each student for future success.
