Students in grades K-2 celebrated National Fire Safety Month with a visit from the Malverne and Valley Stream Fire Departments. The Valley Stream Fire Department came with a modular Smoke House which interactively taught students what to do in a fire through simulations. Students were very excited when the smoke detectors sounded and fake smoke filled the house.
The students left the Smoke House by climbing out a window – all events supervised by the local firemen and classroom teachers. Students also had the opportunity to explore the outside of a fire truck, learn about turnout gear and discuss what a pumper truck does. The children learned many valuable life-saving fire tips during the fun-filled day.
