(APRIL 2022)—Valley Stream UFSD 13’s Willow Road Elementary first-grade students were excited to bring their literacy studies to life with their recent field trip to see the Wizard of Oz at Elmont Library.

The students listened to the classic novel, Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum aloud in their class while studying the various characters and settings in the story.  At the live performance, students were amazed to see the costumes and scenery. They enjoyed comparing them to what they had previously imagined they would be. For most of the first-grade students, this was their first-ever field trip, so the bus ride to the library was a new and exciting experience.

“It was a memorable time for our first-grade students and teachers,” said Rosalie Ambrosio, Principal of Willow Road Elementary School. “Field trips are a great way to enrich and expand the curriculum. When our students go on a field trip, they can strengthen their observation skills and their knowledge in a particular subject area while exploring new venues in our community.”

Classes wrapped up the unit by watching the classic Wizard of Oz film, starring Judy Garland, as they compared the similarities and differences in each version of the tale. To wrap up, the students had the opportunity to vote for their favorite characters and their favorite version of the story!
