Full STEAM Ahead

February 27, 2018

The Valley Stream Union Free School District Thirteen’s James A. Dever Elementary School recently hosted its first Family STEAM Night for students in kindergarten through sixth grade. In support of the District’s continuous efforts to increase student engagement in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics, the night offered students the opportunity to invent, create and experiment at different workshops throughout the school.

Additionally, the afterschool activity encouraged families and students to work together at the numerous stations—providing insight for parents into the 21st century educational experiences occurring at the District on a daily basis. James A. Dever teachers, including speech teacher Christy Taveira, librarian Roxanne MacDonald, and art teacher Janis Boremski, all worked vigorously to create these stations, ensuring the evening was a great success.

The District continues to integrate STEAM into all aspects of students’ daily curriculum and extracurricular activities, fostering student interest in new topic areas to explore and engage.
