The Valley Stream Union Free School District Thirteen’s James A. Dever Elementary School students recently received a visit from local fire departments to learn about fire safety. The Malverne and Valley Stream Volunteer Fire Departments paid a visit to Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade classes. The volunteer fire departments visited the school to teach the students the essential components of fire safety.
The first responders instructed the children on how to distinguish fires, respond–including stop, drop and roll techniques–and even provided in depth tours of a fire truck. The children got to hold the hose, learn about the various gear and equipment used by first responders, and discuss the responsibilities of the fire department. Students were also taken into the smoke house to learn how to exit through a window.
The Valley Stream Union Free School District Thirteen aims to teach its students valuable life and safety skills as well as better their academic skills. Through this fire demonstration, the students obtained more knowledge regarding what to do in the case of an unexpected fire.
