Students at James A. Dever Elementary School recently came together for a heartwarming, integrated collaboration that blended literacy, learning, and service. Ms. Rogers’ 4th-grade class partnered with Ms. DiScala’s kindergarten class as reading buddies to create special “Valentines for Veterans.”
During the activity, older and younger students paired up to read together and discuss the meaning of community service. The group also learned what a veteran is and why it is important to honor those who have served. Through shared stories and conversations, students gained a deeper understanding of gratitude, respect, and civic responsibility.
After reading together, each buddy pair worked side by side to design handmade Valentine’s Day cards filled with colorful artwork and heartfelt messages. The completed cards were donated to local veterans, offering students a meaningful way to give back to members of their own community.
This collaborative project strengthened reading skills, fostered cross-grade friendships, and encouraged compassion and empathy. James A. Dever Elementary School is proud of its students for demonstrating kindness and teamwork while honoring local veterans through this special initiative.
