Students in grades 3–6 at James A. Dever School recently took part in the exciting New York Islanders Floorball Program during their physical education classes. The five-week program introduced students to the fundamentals of hockey in a fun, safe, and engaging way…without the need for ice!
Designed to make hockey accessible to all students, floorball provided an inclusive and energetic environment where participants learned essential skills such as shooting, passing, and stickhandling. Throughout the program, students engaged in skill-building drills and game play, all while developing teamwork, cooperation, and sportsmanship.
In addition to hands-on instruction, the school received a generous equipment package to support the continuation of the program. James A. Dever School was able to keep 30 floorball sticks, 4 floorball nets, 30 floorball balls, 30 New York Islanders pinnies, and a curriculum booklet, ensuring that future students will benefit from the experience for years to come.
“This program was an incredible opportunity for our students to learn the game of hockey in a way that is safe, inclusive, and highly engaging,” said Michael Whelan, Physical Education Teacher. “The students were excited to try something new, and it was wonderful to see their skills and confidence grow each week.”
Carrie Lundgren, Physical Education Teacher, added, “Floorball gave our students a chance to connect with a sport that is such an important part of our local community. They not only learned fundamental hockey skills, but they also practiced teamwork and sportsmanship while having a great time.”
The program provided a unique opportunity for students to experience a new sport connected to their hometown NHL team while reinforcing the importance of physical activity, collaboration, and positive competition. James A. Dever School looks forward to continuing to incorporate floorball into its physical education curriculum.
