Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen students and staff celebrated Earth Week with a series of engaging activities that promoted environmental stewardship, conservation, and a deeper appreciation for the planet.
At James A. Dever Elementary School, students kicked off their celebration with a schoolwide assembly focused on the importance of protecting Earth and understanding its place in the universe. Students explored science concepts through interactive experiences, including an “Earth Ball” activity and an indoor planetarium that brought learning to life excitingly and memorably.
The school community also came together in a colorful show of unity and environmental pride. Students wore green, blue, or white, while teachers wore red, for a special “Love Our Earth” photo. In addition, the school participated in a lights-out initiative, during which classrooms turned off their lights for 20 minutes to practice energy conservation and reflect on how small actions can make a meaningful impact on the environment.
Howell Road Elementary School and James A. Dever Elementary School also celebrated Arbor Day through hands-on planting activities. Students planted seeds and trees, helping them connect directly with nature while contributing to the school’s green spaces. Howell Road School further marked the occasion with an outdoor Arbor Day celebration that encouraged students to appreciate and care for the environment. Through these meaningful activities, Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen students gained valuable lessons about sustainability, conservation, and the importance of protecting the Earth for future generations.
