Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen recently celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a wide range of engaging classroom lessons and activities at all its schools, shining a spotlight on the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.
Throughout the month, students in all grades explored the lasting impact of influential Hispanic figures in the arts, sciences, politics, sports, and social justice. Classrooms came alive with research projects, multimedia presentations, and creative displays highlighting individuals such as Celia Cruz, Sonia Sotomayor, Roberto Clemente, and Dolores Huerta, among many others.
In addition to biographical research, students studied key historical events that shaped Hispanic heritage and discussed the legacies and achievements of Hispanic leaders past and present. Activities were thoughtfully designed to foster inclusivity, appreciation, and cultural understanding, aligning with the district’s commitment to diversity and academic excellence.
“At Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen we encourage our students to understand and value the diverse perspectives that enrich our world,” said Dr. Judith LaRocca, Superintendent of Schools. “Through these interactive lessons and student-led projects, we are building cultural awareness and empowering our students to become thoughtful, informed citizens.”
Highlights from the celebration included:
- Classroom mural projects featuring influential Hispanic Americans
- Student-created videos and presentations on historical contributions
- Interactive read-alouds and storytelling sessions centered around Hispanic culture
- School-wide displays and bulletin boards showcasing student research
Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen remains committed to providing meaningful opportunities for students to explore the many cultures that shape our society, both during Hispanic Heritage Month and throughout the school year.
