—Fourth-grade students in Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen recently participated in a unique and engaging literacy event: “book tasting” with a twist. Designed to promote independent reading and a love for books, the event allowed students to sample a variety of literary genres in a cozy, café-inspired atmosphere.
Complete with faux lattes, menus, and book “flights,” the classroom was transformed into a literary café where students could explore different books, journals, and reflect on their reading preferences. By the end of the activity, each student selected a book of their choice for independent reading, a key goal of the experience.
“We believe that every child should have the opportunity to develop a lifelong love of reading,” said Dr. Lorraine Radice, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction. “Events like these promote student engagement, choice, and ownership of learning which are all critical components of literacy success.”
This event reflects Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen’s ongoing commitment to fostering a culture of literacy, where reading is celebrated, personalized, and accessible to all students. The district remains dedicated to creating meaningful experiences that inspire young readers one book at a time.
