Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen’s fifth and sixth graders in the gifted and talented program had an exciting opportunity to participate in the dynamic STEM X Festival, which was held at the Cradle of Aviation Museum on Friday, October 10. The event was presented in collaboration with National Grid and Morrison Mentors and brought together students from across the region to explore science, technology, engineering, and math through hands-on experiences.
Throughout the day, students rotated through a wide variety of interactive STEM stations, including Rover Robots, drones, virtual reality headsets, circuits, Straw-bees, LEGOs, and solar-powered cars. These engaging activities encouraged students to think creatively and critically about how technology and renewable energy can help design and power the cities of tomorrow.
One of the most impactful moments of the festival was the planetarium show titled Future Cities. This immersive experience inspired students to imagine innovative, sustainable urban environments and consider how they might contribute to building a better future through STEM.
“Our fifth and sixth graders at the festival showcased their impressive growth and collaborative spirit,” said Ms. Garry, teacher in the gifted and talented program at Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen. “They truly rose to the challenge and engaged meaningfully with every opportunity.”
Participation in the STEM X Festival reflects District Thirteen’s ongoing commitment to providing enrichment experiences that challenge and inspire young learners. Events such as this not only broaden students’ academic horizons but also plant seeds for future careers in science and technology.
