Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen officially launched the 2025–2026 school year with its annual Superintendent’s Conference Day, bringing together teachers, administrators, and staff for a day of inspiration, collaboration, and forward-thinking vision.
The event began with a warm welcome from Dr. Judith LaRocca, Superintendent of Schools, and Anthony Grosso, President of the Board of Education. This year’s theme, Building Upward and Moving Onward, set a powerful tone for the year ahead, one focused on growth, innovation, and meaningful progress.
Dr. LaRocca addressed attendees with a passionate overview of the district’s ongoing Strategic Plan process. She highlighted the collaborative efforts underway to align district goals and initiatives, reinforcing a shared vision that supports both student achievement and community engagement.
Dr. Lorraine Radice, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, followed with an insightful presentation on the essential role of literacy in student success. She reaffirmed the district’s commitment to fostering a culture of reading across all schools. As part of this initiative, each staff member received a copy of Just Read by Lori Degman to read aloud to their students, helping nurture a shared love of reading and storytelling.
Andrea DiMango, Executive Director of Technology and Human Resources, introduced several exciting developments in digital literacy. Key highlights included the expansion of digital citizenship lessons for Grade 2, the implementation of new LEGO-based projects in the Innovation Lab, and the expansion of robotics instruction for Grades 1–3. Ms. DiMango also outlined important new guidelines for the responsible and ethical use of AI by both students and staff.
Joining the leadership team for the first time, Gary Gentles, the district’s newly appointed Assistant Superintendent for Business and Operations, shared updates on districtwide renovations and facility improvements. His presentation showcased the district’s ongoing investment in modern, safe, and future-ready learning environments, including updated classrooms and enhanced safety protocols.
