On Wednesday, September 11, 2025, the Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen honored Patriot Day with heartfelt tributes and educational activities, providing students, faculty, and staff with the opportunity to remember, reflect, and engage in meaningful dialogue about the significance of the day.
At James A. Dever Elementary School, the school community gathered for a solemn Patriot Day assembly and remembrance ceremony. Sixth-grade students shared original poetry, which captured themes of unity, courage, and remembrance. Principal Gruen addressed the audience with brief but powerful remarks, emphasizing the importance of honoring the heroes and lives lost on September 11, 2001. A poignant moment was shared when security guard Chris Ward performed “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes, followed by a moment of silence to honor the victims and first responders.
Wheeler Avenue Elementary School’s day began with a schoolwide moment of silence followed by a special announcement reflecting on the significance of Patriot Day. The message highlighted themes of remembrance, heroism, and civic awareness. Following the ceremony, teachers facilitated age-appropriate classroom discussions encouraging students to reflect on how they can contribute positively to their communities.
Howell Road Elementary School also started the day with a moment of silence and a message about the importance of Patriot Day. Afterward, students listened attentively to the powerful story, The Man in the Red Bandana read aloud and reflected on its message. They also were encouraged to write about what they learned from the story or what a hero means to them personally.
“Patriot Day gives our school community a chance to come together in reflection and unity,” said Superintendent Dr. Judith LaRocca, Superintendent of Schools. “It’s a day to honor the lives lost and the heroes who responded, and also to teach our students about resilience, empathy, and the importance of civic responsibility.”
