Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen Shares its Love for the Environment

May 9, 2025

Students across Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen embraced environmental stewardship with Earth Week and Arbor Day celebrations at the Wheeler Avenue, Willow Road, Howell Road, and James A. Dever elementary schools.

At James A. Dever Elementary School, fifth graders in Ms. Kapitansky and Ms. McCabe’s class explored the outdoors with a nature scavenger hunt, while Ms. DeMeo’s second graders composed haiku poems inspired by the environment. These activities combined both literacy and exploratory learning experiences.

Students at Wheeler Avenue Elementary School led recycling initiatives with a series of hands-on activities. They crafted bird-friendly spaces, and participated in gardening projects to promote a greener future.

Willow Road Elementary School marked Arbor Day with a musical collaboration. The school’s first and sixth graders performed “The Trees Are Growing Tall.”

Meanwhile, Howell Road Elementary school students gathered by the school reading garden for its annual Arbor Day ceremony. Student Council members led the Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem, followed by sixth-grade poetry and musical performances. The event culminated in the planting of a hydrangea bush, donated by the PTA, symbolizing the school’s commitment to growth and community.
