Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen Welcomes Bestselling Author

July 11, 2025

Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen recently welcomed New York Times bestselling author Gordon Korman for a special literacy event with the district’s sixth grade students. The visit, which took place at Wheeler Avenue Elementary School, was designed to foster a love of reading and writing and brought together students from across the district for a day of learning and engagement.

The event began with student-led welcome addresses, followed by a presentation from Korman, who shared insights into his career, writing process, and advice for aspiring young writers. Students then participated in small discussion groups centered around Korman’s book The Fort, where they had the opportunity to ask the author questions directly.

Preparation for the event was a true community effort. Teachers incorporated Korman’s books into classroom read-alouds and guided students in creating written and illustrated responses, which decorated the auditorium. The district’s Unity Committee facilitated cross-school connections by organizing mixed-school discussion groups, helping students build relationships before transitioning to Valley Stream Central High School District.
