Valley Stream Union Free School District 13 Appoints New Executive Director of Special Services

(JANUARY, 2022)—The Valley Stream Union Free School District Thirteen Board of Education has appointed Dr. Lisa A. Dunn as the District’s new Executive Director of Special Services. The Board approved the appointment of Dr. Dunn at its January 25, 2022 Board of Education meeting.

“We welcome Dr. Dunn as our next Executive Director of Special Services,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Judith LaRocca. “Dr. Dunn’s experience in the area of programming and development of special services, her administrative background, and her years of teaching on many levels will be a great asset to our central administration team.”

Dr. Dunn has over 15 years of experience in the areas of professional development and supervision, districtwide initiatives, special education, social-emotional learning, academic intervention, curriculum development, technology, and safety. Prior to her appointment as the District’s Director of Special Services, Dr. Dunn served as Assistant Principal at Seaford Middle School, a position she has held since 2016. As a school building leader, she was responsible for developing a variety of district-wide and building-level initiatives. At Seaford, Dr. Dunn facilitated the implementation of procedures related to section 504 as committee chairperson. She was also responsible for ensuring students’ Individualized Education Program are implemented and adhered to pertaining to hiring, supervising, and supporting 1:1 Aides, creating the least restrictive learning environment opportunities, and classroom modifications. Dr. Dunn designed and implemented programming for curriculum initiatives and scheduled and provided support for ENL students and families. Dr. Dunn was the Director of Camp Invention for the Wantagh School District from 2014 to 2016 and an instructional technology mentor in the Wantagh School District from 2007-2016.

“I am thrilled to be joining the central administration team in the Valley Stream Union Free School District Thirteen,” said Dr. Dunn. “As the Executive Director of Special Services, I will promote school culture and educational programs conducive to student learning. I strongly believe that all students can learn and deserve a supportive learning environment with high expectations. I am looking forward to bringing that vision to my work with Superintendent Dr. LaRocca and the entire family of outstanding educators in Valley Stream 13.”

Dr. Dunn earned her Bachelor of Arts in Romance Languages from Dowling College, a Master of Science with Distinction in Secondary Language from Hofstra University, and her Doctor of Education in Administration and Instructional Leadership from St. John’s University. Dr. Dunn also holds an advanced certification in school administration from Stony Brook University.
