Valley Stream, NY (October 2021)—On Tuesday, October 26, the Wheeler Ave Elementary School of Valley Stream Union Free School District Thirteen attended the New York Islanders Virtual School Assembly. The event was hosted by the National Hockey League and the Islanders. This program was designed to educate students on the importance of teamwork and healthy life choices.
“This was a fantastic experience for our students. It was great to see students fully engaged and participate in the assembly,” said Mr. John Frias, Principal of Wheeler Ave Elementary School. “We strive to be able to give our students new learning experiences while they are also having fun. We hope to have more virtual events that our students can attend in the future.”
During the interactive assembly, the Islanders’ host and mascot Sparky helped the students realize why being committed to making smart decisions is important in school and life. The assembly had interactive question and answer sessions, warm-up exercises, and students were able to watch short videos showcasing teamwork on and off the ice.
