Recently, fourth-grade students from Willow Road Elementary School were announced as regional winners in the Statewide Elementary Mathematics Tournament by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). The three Willow Road students in Mr. Costantino’s class, Luca Amato, Tyler Campbell, and Benjamin Farina, won the regional First In Math competition and have qualified for the statewide championship finals taking place in Albany this month. The students received trophies and Willow Road Elementary School will receive a plaque and a $1,000 prize from NYSED. The Statewide Elementary Mathematics Tournament is part of NYSED’s expanded math access program.
“Thanks to the dedicated work of our faculty, our students are excelling in all areas of study. This win in mathematics demonstrates our students’ commitment to their studies and the passion with which our teachers impart knowledge to our students. To compete against hundreds of other students and qualify for the Statewide championship round demonstrates the excellence of our academic program and the level of expertise our students are able to achieve,” said Dr. Judith LaRocca, Superintendent of Valley Stream UFSD Thirteen. “Great job to our students and good luck in the finals!”
The Statewide Elementary Mathematics Tournament is a collaborative event organized by The New York State Education Department and First In Math. This tournament consists of a Virtual Regional Contest determining which students out of 150 will qualify for the in-person Statewide Championship Event. Students will compete in a group setting at the in-person tournament on May 20, 2023, at University At Albany.
