Willow Road Elementary School recently held its annual Mitten Tree Drive in conjunction with the yearly reading of “The Mitten Tree.” The story is about a caring, kind-hearted woman named Sarah who knits mittens for children in need. She then hangs them on a very special tree for those less fortunate children to receive.
Students were asked to donate a pair of mittens or gloves for the children in our community that may be in need of a warm clothing this winter. Mittens were collected from December 1 through December 23 by Willow Road coordinator, Mrs. Lorraine Grosso and displayed in the main lobby of the school on the mitten tree!
This year, the students and families of Willow Road Elementary collected 175 pairs of mittens and gloves. The mittens will be donated to Holy Name of Mary Church in Valley Stream, Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Malverne and St. Catherine’s Church in Franklin Square.
